Project 1 - Famous People, Familiar Faces

DIAGRAMMATIC ABSTRACTION

Objective -

To investigate and to explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics.-solid, planes, lines and frames. Upon completion of the project student should be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept to their project later.

The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment.

We formed a group consisting of 6 people. The project gave us the opportunity to research more on the modern masters of architecture.. The building we investigated on by the modern architect, Walter Gropius is the Gropius House.

Walter Gropius and the Gropius House

This project explored the diagrammic composition that gave the basis of architectural design elements found in the gropius house. From the Gropius House, form follow function is emphasized through the usage of space and planning.

Based from the Gropius House, we did a study and extract the compositions that made up the elements of the house. We then translate the compositions diagrammatically.

Learning Outcome

-This project exposed me to modern architect which I had no clue about their importance and work before.

- This project also exposed me more to architectural drawings and gave a refreshing kickstart in the beginning of the year.

-I learned the importance of hierarchy of spaces to show the importance of the space itself, oblique approach on how it prolongs the directed path to emphasize on certain elements of the building, and basically how to apply diagrammatic compositions onto future projects.

Project 2a: Introduction to Site Analysis + Picnic Pavilion @ Port Dickson

Objective -

The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation (which relates to project 1), with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

This fun project required us to make a 3 days 2 nights trip to port dickson. The whole point of the trip was to do a site analysis of the site, Eagle Ranch Beach in Port Dickson. After analysing, we are to work in pairs and start brainstorming towards the best site for a picnic pavilion.

Site Analysis

Me and my group mate, Adrian decided on the client Robert Rainford as our pick for this project. Basically, Robert Rainford is a BBQ chef..

Learning Outcome

- A better understanding of diagrammatic composition

-A better understanding of site context and how it relates to the building

-A better extraction of getting a concept

- Practicality and aesthetic approach at the same time

Project 2b: Beach House @ Port Dickson

Objective -

To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design

To introduce students’ to the understanding of user specific design requirements

To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design

To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis

In this project, we are to further develop our project 2a into a beach house at Port Dickson. A beach house denotes ‘A place affording peace, quiet, privacy and security’ ….. where its occupant(s) would reside for a short period of time. This beach house must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, showering, cooking, storage and such within the built up space of 150 m2. The relationship between the design and the context is also important in making the retreat unique to its landscape and activity.

Learning Outcome

- learned to interpret and analyse simple site context

- learned to interpret and analyse client’s character and needs in relation to the design of a small building

- learned to design a simple building type that meets user requirements and respect site context that balances both internal (architectural spaces/layout/circulation) and external (aesthetics and forms) design values
