Project 1 - "Space Out- The Material Cube"

Project 1 of Building Materials requires student to design and build 2 cubes using paper and wood materials. The task is to build one 12"x12"x12" inch paper and wooden cube each. The cubes are to be produced using one material of choice for each category of paper and wood with a fastening system at student's discretion.

Year of production: 2014. FRAME.

Learning to work with different types of cardboards was a good experience. This project has gave me valuable insights on how cardboards can be so manageable in terms of workability to shape the form i wanted. On the other hand, through this project, I got my hands on working with balsa wood. The pro of using balsa woods is that it is manageable compared to most wood products out there. However, it sometimes is more fragile than cardboard in some manner. To add to that, balsa woods are also highly expensive and not so economical. Still, this project opened more alternatives and influenced my choices of material whenever I am deciding for a project.

Project 2 - "Materiality Of Space: An Experiential Exploration

For Project 2, it requires us to form a group of 5 and to select a commercial/residential building which allow us to experience and explore most of the buildings materials covered in the module. The building chosen was Panahome. Panahome is a bungalow house which showcases eco and smart elements in it's approach. It is designed to be environment friendly and energy efficient. The construction itself is utilising pre-fabricated steel frame technology to ensure high and consistent building quality.

This project taught me more regarding the different technologies and materials that goes hand in hand with architecture. Through the hands on experience and exposure, I also got to discover more regarding how the architecture from Japan and Malaysia is different in terms of how the structure withstand earthquake and natural disasters in Japan. Also, this project improved my Photoshop skills as I got to apply and learn more things from the experience gained.
