Assignment 1:

Experiencing Construction -

Experiencing, documenting and analysing the CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

Objectives:

-To introduce basic principles  and procedures of construction process through real-life project (experiential learning).

-To understand the sequence and coordination of construction at site.

-To expose students to construction technology/methods responding to site  context.

-To allow student to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology.

-To train students to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing  relating to EXISTING construction.

Out task was to select an ongoing construction site which visibly demonstrates most of the subject topics covered in the syllabus. We were blessed with a nearby construction site at Glenmarie Temasya, the project at that time was covering a double storey terrace house.

While in site, we documented and analysed the different building elements, materials, details and the construction process. As a group, we divided and segmented the task to different parts and compiled a full document at the end. I would like to extend my thanks to Mr Tan and Mr I for helping us and assisting us through the project. I also want to thank IR Henry Chua for the input on foundation.

Report

Learning Outcome:

- Producing a complete documentation (pictures, sketches and drawing) and an analysis of construction elements.

- Understanding of construction elements and its components.

- Understanding the current construction technology on local construction sites.

- Explaining current materials and technology in relevance to the present construction industry.

Assignment 2: Construction Detail and Specification

Objectives :

- To develop an understanding of the structural elements in construction and its application in the construction industry.

- To apply suitable construction elements, material and detail/joint solutions suitable for a specific design.

- To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of build ability.

- To demonstrate awareness of how buildings are developed in response to practical considerations.

- To demonstrate certain levels of manual drawing and sketching skills.

- To allow students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology.

- To encourage students to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing relating to construction.

This project is interconnected with Design Studio 2. We were to explore our own building design and to use the combination of steel and timber to form the roof, foundation and the house. Concrete and plastering are not totally excluded from this project, but we were encouraged to explore with our imagination using timber and steel.
