In Hidden Cities 3, Marozia is a city described by Calvino as one of the rat and one of the swallow. From what Calvino described, a new century is about to begin in which all the inhabitants of Marozia will fly like swallows in the summer sky. In my interpretation, it can be said, at the present, the rat and swallow are living a life of their own separately. And as time passes, the rats of the cities will eventually be either phased out or totally replaced by swallows. From the photograph, the boy can be seen walking with a school bag and holding a textbook. On the other hand, a man can be seen collecting scraps loading into his trishaw. Viewing it in Calvino’s perspective, the school boy represents the swallow who is doing something to get out from the current position. In contrast, the scrap collector represents the rat struggling daily to live. Therefore in the years to come, more and more people are getting educated and seeking for a change. The future of the city will be placed in the hands of the younger generations (the swallows).

Issue: The struggle in life because of not being able to adapt to a society that are made up of like-minded people. Social barriers are formed as a result of different educational standpoint, it distances people from each other. Rendering unity among the people a far cry away.

As the country progresses 25 years down the road, science and technology becomes the focus of the country. Machinery ultimately replaces most of the manual jobs, leaving many people without formal education jobless. With the expansion of the city into Kampung Baru, many people were forced to give up their kampong lifestyle and to adapt to the changes. However, many were unable to adapt and became nothing but an outcast to society. With nowhere to go, the outcasts started drifting underground and making their own hideouts in the smart tunnel and forming a new kind of lifestyle.

After 50 years, the underground society continuously expands in number as they are unable to adapt to the society. Soon, this creates two types of societies with different ideologies. The increasing population of the underground society worries the government. So the government devises a plan to flood the tunnel to draw out the underground society. However the government cannot use brute force to force the underground society out of their hideouts, as the threat by the underground society to sink the whole of Kuala Lumpur City above them is too great a risk. Therefore, leading the government into investing in Gundam technologies and progressing the nation towards strengthening the military. Meanwhile, the underground society brainwashed child soldiers into fighting and hatred towards the government.

After 100 years, Gundams and military equipment are used in military and as an authority figure because of the constant acts of terrorism by the underground society. Feeling threatened, the underground society secretly infiltrate and steal Gundam technologies. Thus, began the Gundam war conflicts between the 2 different societies, tearing the city and humanity apart. With the constant conflict, home becomes a warzone. Buildings are ruined beyond repair. The city cannot progress forward. With the damaged drainage system, the city becomes a sea of water. Ultimately, the people lost the trust of the government and the city becomes a dystopian city.
